Coming to understand these precepts is one thing, but how does one implement them into a day-to-day life in the world of today? This is the question Robert was faced with.
Robert decided to start with a perspective change and see what would happen. An experiment began that had some very interesting results. What would happen if Robert related to everything in his life from the view of his Soul and/or Spirit?
As with all major changes, it started being more difficult than he had originally expected, but in a surprisingly short time the difficulties started to diminish.
The change of perspective had its own problems since he was treading in places he had only read about and did not actually know anyone there to help him find his way. The toughest part for Robert was keeping the new perspective alive on a consistent basis, falling into a lifetime of habit was ridiculously easy.
Surprisingly quickly, Robert noticed a series of things happening in his life that were just too large to write off casually as coincidence. Robert would start thinking about someone or something and then run into that person or object in short order. Robert also noticed there was a calm peacefulness that was permeating his life. When he followed the peace, the most difficult tasks were accomplished practically on their own.
Finding a state of calm and peacefulness is one thing, but what good is it if everyone you see around you is miserable and apparently completely lacking in peace in their own lives?
Robert had found this wonderful state of being and was enjoying life for the first time in a long time and so began working on expanding this state to other aspects of his life. With this internal enjoyment occurring, Robert was finding the world around him a touch depressing since the vast majority were apparently lost in the usual state of perception and therefore absolutely miserable.
One of the many issues that Robert has had from very early on was a desire to help others and make them happy. He realized very quickly that people are attached to their misery, though most were not sufficiently aware of it to admit it. The direct approach was going to make many angry in that it rattled their cages of contentment to which they had grown accustomed.
It took Robert quite some time to accept the idea that, though most do not realize it, everyone chooses their state of mind and being. Like a chemically addicted person, people are unable to be helped until they are at least willing to see that they want some help and are willing to make changes.
This realization brought a certain amount of sadness through compassion for the pain of others. It also brought a release of joy because Robert now knew that he did not have to make that choice. Robert now was fully aware that he was responsible only for his own happiness.
Several years later, Robert came across a line from the Nag Hammadi scrolls that truly spoke to this:
Jesus said: ‘Let him who seeks continue seeking until he finds. When he finds, he will become troubled. When he becomes troubled, he will be astonished, and he will rule over All’
Gospel of Thomas verse 2
When Robert read this, he felt like he truly understood it.
